Immediately after the attacks, Nolan contacted Nick Stefano, who
operates weather
networks in New York and New Jersey, to set up a weather network
around the WTC site.
Stefano remembers heading to the scene with some of his own
weather instruments only
days after the attack. "We went down at night," he says. "I was
in buildings that were
condemned with no power, I had a gas mask, hard hat, flashlight,
and this weather equipment.
"We installed 10 stations all around the perimeter overlooking the
complex at different
elevations," Stefano says, "and I interfaced every station with a
laptop and Weatherview32 software."

The Ground Zero stations also instantaneously record the humidity,

and calculate wind chill and heat index values, says station
technician Nick Stefano.
Station technician, Nick Stefano, checks the weather data
